Whether they are telling the truth, or not, may not be the central
question... there is no question that moreshops use 2 ml film these days.

If you are making only pattern plated boards, and unless you have your
plating completely under control, you inevitably experience some over-plating.
Using 2 ml film helps minimize this, and thus should improve yields, which is why
most people switch to this thicker film.

Maybe you should try it out, and see the results?
