It sounds like the customer does not want anyone to be able to easily reverse engineer their product. A label might be easily removed, allowing someone to identify the component used.

I suspect that you will either have to use mechanical abrasion or laser the marking off, but you would have to be careful that the laser does not create excess heat. I'm not really familiar with laser marking, but I would imagine that using a laser to obliterate existing markings might be somewhat extensive.
