If you test the raw board, you know how dirty it was. It you test a
populated board (and compensate the test results for the increased square
inches or cm) than you know the amount of 'dirt' on the board and the
components.
And it you believe in Murphy, you know that some of the dirt from the
components will ultimately get to the spot on the assembly where it will do
most harm.

Subject: [TN] Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) testing of populated
boards

Good Afternoon,

We are generating a test plan to evaluate the selection of a new saponifier
for our WESTEK in-line cleaner. We have been looking at running a SIR test
but most literature I read discusses running this test on bare boards and
not populated boards. Is there a reason for this? Would someone please
comment on the value of running this test on populated boards vs. bare
boards? thanks

joe
