John, don't know if you remember, but when I was with Square D (Florida)
back in the dark ages, we were one of your first customers on that subject.
The problems we experienced were with latent failures when the chips cracked
on our GFI products. You worked with a terrific engineer named Tom Valliere
on that one.

Ted asks a good question. Is the distance still the same for the smaller
package parts?

Subject: Re: [TN] Subject: V-Groove Keep Out Area

Bob,
I am the guilty party that established the 5mm rule. That was done back
when I was consulting and was the result of numerous cracked capacitors
around the world. One would think that things have gotten better with the
move to smaller parts but dielectric thickness and also shrunk increasing
crack sensitivity so things are effectively the same. Cracked capacitors
put two kids and my wife through university along with paying the rent. Ah
to be consulting again with the same problems being repeated, easy work.
