Shelf life and the ability to withstand multiple soldering operations is the
standard answer Victor. And while there is an enormous range of alternative
protective coatings on offer now, some better than others; all OSP's and
other 'non fused' protective coatings only 'protect' the copper from
oxidising, they say little about the solderability of the copper.

A fused solder coating confirms the solderability of each interconnection
site as well as the integrity of the whole board to withstand the soldering
processes. And it will always be easier to solder to solder than copper.

63Sn37Pb Horizontal HASL results in 'free solder' thicknesses that are
typically between 1 and 20 microns. Our experience to date suggests that the
Pb free alloys will allow this range to tighten down to 2 to 10 microns.

Pete,

What is the advantage of using a LF HASL versus other OSP finish.

Victor,

Any UK Manufacturer could provide you with a lead free HASL finish by using
a local 'out source' service David. We would be please to process any
samples for you FOC.

Anyone know of any companies currently making lead-free hot air leveled
boards? Thanks!
