When we do the hand solder it takes about 1.5 hr. so we clean with IPA then
wash with water. The flux core is alcohol based and cleans fairly well with
IPA but we do hand clean after with saponifier and water. I did a little
experiment with new copper. It looks like it might be the WS flux, but the
parts that have the green are not hand soldered and the parts that are hand
soldered do not have it.

Most people obsess about white residues on the basis they indicate a
possible problem, However coloured ones are much worse. They are virtually
certain evidence of actual corrosion. Usually due to incomplete removal of
flux or processing chemicals......I'm curious about your hand solder and
cleaning procedures.
I think maybe a typo here reversing what you do. If you are using water
sol
flux it would be better to wash in water and then use the IPA to dry. Its
not going to clean well in IPA. Are the assemblies really sitting around
partially cleaned and wet before being introduced to the cleaner?

Subject: [TN] Green residue.

I just got some pictures from a customer of what appears to be some green
residue on some of the SMT leads. It is only on a couple of components on
one
assembly of five. We used a water soluble paste for the SMT, water soluble
flux for hand solder and washed in a Westek inline cleaner with saponifier.
I
have seen the saponifier turn brass a blue/green color but not even close
to
this green. There are some connectors and one IC that do not go through the
wash and are hand cleaned first with IPA and then a water rinse. Anybody
got
an idea? Maybe (please) I could get Steve to post a picture.
Thanks in advance.
