Mary, I have horrible visual acuity, and can't clearly see much farther
than three inches from my eyes. Fortunately, there are wonderful tools
I can put on my nose that allow me to find my way around. And since I'm
the "engineer", I'm the final say on whether certain defects are really
defects. If IPC made a visual acuity for solder inspection standard,
they would have to either distinguish between the lenses in glasses or
contacts and the lenses in a magnifier or scope, or play a double
standard where the "decision makers" don't have to comply with the
visual acuity requirement. I personally don't see any distinction
between lenses on wire frames and lenses in a scope. Both are "aids"
and have the affect of focusing an image on the retina.

Any related requirements have been or are being removed from IPC
standards. The correct assessment is whether an individual can do the
job they are required to do in an acceptable manner with appropriate
aids that may need to be provided by the employer. For broader
explanation, i.e. avoiding worker discrimination lawsuits, consult your
HR about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Group,

Is it mentioned anywhere in any of the IPC standards a visual acuity for
solder inspection? Thanks.
