The spec only requires that the tip not vary more than
10 degrees at idle, from whatever temperature it's set
to.  With available technology, it's not possible to
dial in, let's say 600F and have the iron come in
somewhere between 590 and 610.

Measure the temperature at idle.  Wait and see if it
moves off that measurement more than 10 degrees.  If it
doesn't, you pass.

What is the accepted procedure to "calibrate" the solder iron tip
temperature to MIL-STD-2000, +/-10 degrees of the selected temperature? I
would not expect the digital readout to match the solder iron tip as
measured using a "thermocoupled solder bead sensor" due to the expected
heat loss. Must I use an embedded thermocouple into a tip? Is the digital
readout required to match the tip temperature?
