In days of yore, before e-mail was invented, and these crooks used
snailmail, a guy in Yverdon, Vaud, Switzerland, was naive enough to fall
for their scam. He emptied his company's bank account and mortgaged his
house to raise the $75,000 "good faith" money, which he put in a brief
case. He was arrested on landing at Lagos airport for infringing
currency regulations (the crooks were hand in glove with the customs
guys) and thrown in clink, where he languished for four months. He was
eventually released with a deportation order, minus credit cards, money,
the lot, with the police retaining his passport. He even had to sign an
IOU for the cost of his ticket back. Having been absent for months, his
enterprise had gone back to the wall and he had to ask for bankruptcy
protection. In the meanwhile, his wife had been unable to keep up with
the mortgage payments and sought shelter elsewhere with the kids. In
short, his life was in tatters. Within a few days, his body was found
with a bullet through his head and a suicide note, explaining his saga
in detail, was found (and published in a local newspaper).

So, yes, I can believe there are always pigeons for these hawks.
