I strongly recommend POPFile if you are on a POP3 mail server. This is a
Bayesian mail sorter (for example, you can set up any number of
mailboxes for different types of mail, including spam, of course). I've
been using it for 18 months, along with virus detection (I use Norton)
and a firewall (ZoneAlarm), of course. All my IPC mail goes into an IPC
"bucket" from which it is sorted into general, TN, LF, EN by my e-mail
client, while all the "out-of-office" messages go into my spam bucket. I
have six other buckets for other mail categories. My current accuracy
figures for the automatic sorting is 99.3%, a little down from my
average at the moment (average is ~99.6%). Over the past six months, I
think I've had 3 spam messages reach a "ham" bucket.

It does require training on errors, but you should reach at least a 98%
accuracy level after, say, 1,000 or so messages.

You can find this at http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ -- it is open
source, therefore free.

And, yes, if you wish it, it will put all the offers of money into a
spam bucket, along with enticements to sexual pleasures, suggestions to
be ordained or to buy your PhD, quotations for spam software or office
supplies, even those with "word salads".
