hi,

one test would be a ftir analysis for organic materials. i suspect most test labs can do that. i believe ftir stands for 'fast fourier transform infrared. on the other hand it might stand for 'finds the incredible residue'.

Subject: [TN] PCBA surface analysis

I am looking for a lab in the bay area that offers surface analysis on
PCBA. I am not looking for Ionic contamination but I am looking to see
if there is any other substance that is inhibiting conductivity on our
testers.

We do not perform ICT on our boards; we go right from SMT into
functional testing of the boards. Our tester applies pressure from the
top, pogo pins are used to make contact for testing. One of the reported
mechanisms for first failures is due to some sort of contamination on
the board preventing it from making contact, cleaning the board appears
to change the results. This contamination is something that we can not
visually see. I would like to eliminate the possibility of
contamination causing non-contact related issues therefore would like
some suggestions on what type of testing to have conducted and if there
is a local lab that can perform the surface test.

We use a non-clean solder process.
