Presenting: David Hoover of Multek, Inc.

- CAUTION - High Speed Zone Ahead!

6:00PM Tuesday, May 25th, 2004 at Overland Storage, San Diego, CA

Topic Description:
A discussion on Controlled Impedance - High-Speed Design Guidelines and
Capabilities and Low Loss Materials (including Low Loss Substrates and High
Frequency) Presented by David Hoover - Sr. Field Applications Engineer,
Multek, Inc. and Leena Gulia - OEM Marketing Engineer, Park/Nelco
The presentation will discuss many of the typical issues encountered with
modeling, specifying, and testing Controlled Impedance (CI) PCBs. Starting
with a list of conditions identifying when a PCB may require CI, the
presentation will explore the various techniques used today to model CI from
the Motorola MECL formulae through 3D Field Solvers. Examples will be
presented on how entry variables can affect the calculated results based on
the modeling software parameters. Additionally, they will cover common Dk
ranges found in standard Epoxy based FR-4 along with typical Er expectations
found at higher frequencies. Discussion on low loss substrates along with
what is currently being used to gain higher data rates (10 and up to 40 GHz)
on multilayer PCBs and the cost implications of switching between material
sets.

David Hoover is employed by Multek Technology acting as a (field) Staff
Application Engineer based in the San Jose area. Dave's experience includes
27+ years of Printed Circuit Industry experience. Dave is active in the IPC
and sits on a few subcommittees, including the Controlled Impedance Circuit
Boards and High Speed Logic Design subcommittee. He has been a member of The
Technical Program Committee for the last three years of IPC Expo
Conference's. Dave's engineering expertise includes high performance
materials, Signal Integrity Analysis, and PCB Surface Finishes.

Leena Gulia works for Park Nelco as an OEM Marketing Engineer. She is
responsible for interacting with the OEMs to better assist them with their
material needs depending on the various designs and applications. Leena has
a MS in Chemistry from Wright State University and has been a part of this
industry for a little over 4 years. Before that Leena has worked in the
capacity of a Research Chemist. Leena is an active member of IPC, TMRC, and
APEX and has been performing the duties as the chairman of the Laminators
committee for the last two years at the IPC.
