Brian wouldn't the honey addition also have made a better flux? the sugars
giving a Fehling's like reduction?

Yup! The A version was, I believe, activated with citric and malic acids.

For the record, the makers of the Zeva drag soldering machines
introduced a flux ca. 1975 which also consisted of citric acid,
glycerol, water and ethanol. It wasn't brilliant. I guess they were
particularly fond of tribasic molecules! The Hughes claim of being the
first to use fruit acids was therefore a myth. I dare say that the Zeva
formulation would have made a pleasant cough medecine if they hadn't
been forced to use a denatured alcohol! They should have added some honey!
