The Latest Solution for Data Transfer between Design and Manufacturing

Data capture and data transfer have been difficult processes for designers during the last three decades.  Designers of old understood the importance of intelligent data when building the products of our industry.  They participated in standard development meetings and analyzed the machine language used to drive a flat-bed photo-plotter made by Gerber Scientific.  A great machine; a great machine language.  However, even with this language, intelligent data still did not exist.   

In spite of these challenges, the past thirty years have not been entirely unproductive. Today, the world "surfs" the Net and information must be exchanged in terminology relating to it.  IPC-2511 was updated to handle XML as the data format of choice for this application. Then, a project was born that converged the best of IPC-2511 and a proprietary format developed by Valor Company, known as ODB++. The new standard, IPC-2581, is consistent with many of the existing board and assembly tools. In addition, CAD tool providers have agreed to develop software that can extract the offspring of GenCAM and ODB++ from their systems.  IPC-2581 is now available at http://webstds.ipc.org.

It provides a useful intelligent description needed for printed board fabrication and printed board assembly. The structure is easy to understand and relates to the domain it is intended to serve. Although more complex than the Gerber machine language, the data is similar in that it is layered to facilitate manufacturing comprehension. 

This webcast will cover the important highlights about data capture and transfer described above and will emphasize the capability embedded in the IPC-2581 format.
