I have not seen any press-fit connector that takes 70lb per pin ( I am
interested in knowing which one you are talking about - may be power
connectors with hole sizes at about 0.1"?

Typically the C-Press contacts, which means that the cross section of the
compliant section is in the shape of a C and when it 'complies', the shape
closes in, take more force than the rest of the lot - eye of the needle,
action pin, baby-h, etc.

If the finished hole size specified by the connector manufacturer is 0.040",
the tolerance on the finished hole would be ±0.003". Once that is
maintained, the press-fit is a breeze. These connectors can take upto 40lb.
per pin, when the hole size is at its lowest. Normally they go at 25lb. per
pin.

The rest of the connectors 2mm, cPCI, Z-pack, HSHM, VHDM etc. are hole sizes
in the range of low 20s or less in mils. Typically the finished hole size
tolerance here is ±0.002". When fab people grumble about this tolerance, you
try to go one mil less and have 3mil tolerance, etc.

All these connectors range at 5-15lb. per pin.

You can use Arbor presses, which are operator dependant and they could
complain of shoulder pain.
You can use Hydraulic or Pneumatic presses, but the settings have to be
followed carefully - even then, you would be delivering what ever you set it
for whether the connector needs it or not.
You can also use Electric Presses - I have used ASG's (now Tyco) Manual as
well as Automatic Electric presses, which are by far the best for delicate
work - costly connectors, costly PCBs, etc. Also, if you are producing
boards in 100's, you would like to get safe, repeatable and reliable
processes installed.

You will still need arbor presses for PEM nuts, studs, etc.

For all these you need good back-up fixtures that support where you are
pressing, but do not interfere with bottom side SMT components!

I have processed in my career, simply thousands of backplanes, daughter
cards with exotic press-fit connectors and handled several board finishes -
HASL, Entec, Immersion Gold, Immersion Silver and Immersion Tin. HASL works
great, except for C-Press with high aspect ratio. Gold on Gold is very tough
and Immersion silver takes a lot of force.

I could go on and on. Let me know what your specific questions are....

        Victor:
A brief summary is that PFC are faster to assemble. Need a
very powerful press, up to 70 lbs per pin. Puts a lot of stress to the
board. Every thing needs to be within spec. If the holes are too small, they
will be damaged. If the holes are too large, junctions may not be good
enough.

        Ramon
