IPC-A-610C
6.7.1 Insulation - In Solder
Acceptable - Class 1,2,3
* Limited solder wicking during soldering of wire is permissible as long
as the solder does not extend to a portion of the wire which is required
to remain flexible.

J-STD-001C
6.1.3.1 Tinning of Stranded Wire Wicking of solder under the insulation
should be minimized to maintain wire flexibility.
7.1.6 Solder Wicking Solder wicking shall not extend to a portion of the
wire which is required to remain flexible.

Minor wordsmithing proposed for 610D (it's an acceptance document so
words address "what is" rather than "what is permissable to do". The
J001C clause 6.1.3.1 changed in Rev D so that only one real criteria is
in the standard--"shall" rather than "should."
IPC-A-610D Proposed
Acceptable - Class 1,2,3
*Solder wicks up wire provided the solder does not extend to a portion
of the wire that is required to remain flexible.

J-SD-001D Proposed
5.1.1 Tinning of Stranded Wire Solder wicking shall not extend to a
portion of the wire which is required to remain flexible.

Subject: [TN] Friday Afternoon Wire Question

A hopefully easy question for Friday...Does anyone know of a
specificaiton or guideline that specifies how far solder can wick up a
stranded wire? Seems like I've seen it in the past but can't think of
where.

Thanks,

Don Vischulis
