Hi Steve! Wow, looks like something Doug would solder together after a few
too many Diet Mt. Dews! But you have great timing - we just published our
solder joint modification configuration paper at the APEX show. The test
data shows that your "whatchamacallit" configuration will not survive Class
3 thermal cycling (-55C to +125C) due to a lack of stress relief in the mod
wire. Also, putting a ceramic component in a vertical configuration leaves
it very susceptible to being cracked. And last but not least, did the
designer address the "whatchamacallit" vibration reliability aspects? I
don't believe this solder joint modification configuration is going to be
reliable in a Class 2 use environment. Good Luck!

"Necessity is the mother of invention..."
                                     -Frank Zappa

Not real sure if Frank Zappa really quoted that...however, I do know he was
in the mothers of invention. "What's that got to do with anything Steve?"
you're probabably pondering now. Well, the point is, if one needs
something, one
will create it.

I'm sure you all have heard the terms; dead-bug, scab resistors, hay-wires,
etc. Those are terms mostly heard when you're talking about prototypes. I
like
prototypes, because you can do just about anything you want with them if
you
need to...creativity is the only limiting factor.

I've seen something new recently, and I don't know what to call it. There
obviously was a real need for what you are about to see, so it was made. Go
take
a look at "What-cha-macallit" at http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com and
tell
me what YOU would call it.
