From a sociological standpoint, that's because people tend to form
mini-groups to which they associate.  It's human nature to form
societies or societies within societies where members feel they are a
part.  It helps us meet some of Maslows higher needs (Social Needs)

Has anyone observe this phenomenon in manufacturing? I notice that the
SMT people don't associate with the thru hole people.
and the same for our mechanical assembly team and test operators. They
all take break and eat lunch separately, sit together for factory
meetings etc.
Just a curiosity more than anything else. There is nothing overt or mean
between anyone in the other depts. They just don't associate with SMT.
