My college physics professor gave a formula for calculating how high is up.
Anybody else heard of it? Had something to do with inverse proportion to the
distance between the centers of the objects in question. There was an
additional equation if more than two objects were to be considered.

**Nope.  Up is verticle.  String length is horizontal.  Completely
different thing.
