If you start talking about REACTIVE dyes, then as your mythical customer
I would want to know if you were going to use it on real product and
when would you be doing your copper mirror, halide ion, SIR and

Tom,

You have already gotten some great offers from the others but let me add
a couple of things.

It sounds like you are looking for a blue fluorescent indicator which is
soluble in both your specific flux, paste, and cleaning solvent systems.

When I first started implementing no clean in our factory, I discovered
that the particular flux we had approved had a unique attribute to it
that the manufacturer never publicized.  If the liquid flux came into
contact with human skin, it stained it fluorescent yellow/green.  I
tried to use the same quality to inspect flux coverage on pwbs but the
flux looks dark
brown on pwbs and components under a blacklight.    The dye in the flux
did
however give me a great training aid for new operators and ensuring that
they wore the proper protective gloves at all times.

You already have some great offers from Rudy and Mike, but I will add
one more source of a fluorescent raw material that I have used in the
past.

If I knew more about what you are trying to test I might have made the
recommendation that you find a dye that reacts with the residues left
behind by the cleaning operation, rather than "mucking" with the
rheology
of the paste, or changing the composition of the fluxes,   It gets
pretty
complicated otherwise because you have to be sure that the adulterant
does not leach out of your residues, or perhaps causes your residues to
resist the cleaning solvents.

I will add something that I learned the hard way.... a little bit of dye
goes a LONG way.  I am still using the sample I got from Pylam when they
were still locate on the east coast, and that was many years ago.

It might be easier to make the residues turn dark brown by exposing the
assembly to high enough heat if you are strictly looking for visual
evidence of residues.  Not to mention that trying to shine a black light
under low standoff SMT parts is difficult in the first place, so some
other method might be more prudent (like cutting the component off).

Either way, have fun.  (Oh, by the way, if you do happen to get the
fluorescent material on your skin, it takes about 2-3 weeks before it
goes away).
