Joe,

AIM has customers that conformal coat over our no-clean solder paste residues. In general the
success of this operation depends on the paste in use, the coating in use and the coating process.
You may find a report of some of our findings about this at
http://www.aimsolder.com/techarticles/Conformal%20Coatings%27%20Compatibility%20With%20AIM%20Flux%20Residues.pdf

This report concludes that many solder flux chemistries are compatible with coatings, although
slight process adjustments were necessary for certain products. When encapsulating no-clean flux
residues, process techniques can be as important as the particular encapsulate being used. Curing
encapsulates too rapidly can melt the flux residue, which can inhibit curing. Therefore, a slower,
cooler cure rate that is within the specified limits of the encapsulate is suggested. Furthermore,
if a high-solvent spray material is applied too wet, the solvent will soak into the flux (especially
paste residues) and cause blow-holes during final cure. Therefore, utilizing a thinner, lighter coat
when using these materials is recommended.
