We have a KIC we've used for years for Reflow Profiles with no problems. It has a soft protective heat barrier which can easily be handled as it exits the oven. But, the mole itself is still gets pretty hot. Also, on the version we have, the data needs to be downloaded right after running -- it can't be shut off and downloaded later. So, interruptions don't work well.

We also recently purchased an ECD. The ECD can be used not only for profiling, but, can also be used with ECD's WaveRider and OvenRider for collecting data for process control programs. We've received excellent support from ECD. This comes with a metal heat barrier that gets pretty darned hot. You'll need to buy some thermal gloves. The mole can be shut off and downloaded later.

In a past life I used the DataPaq and the Datapaq surveyor. No problems.

My recommendation is, if you have the opportunity to see each and run a few profiles with each, it will be easier to make your decision. Also, consider ALL of the process you may want to use the tool for, HOW you want to use it, the availability of accessories, the availability of spares, and, the availability of on-line as well as telephone assistance.

I also received a lot of help from our wave machine manufacturer in deciding which tool would pride the best process control data. You may want to call your oven manufacturers to see what they use and what they recommend.

Subject: [TN] Thermal Profiling systems

Hi Technet,

Some years ago I replaced my defective Supermole with a much cheaper
Temprec thermologger, but because of the feature-limited software and
the increased profile-control that we'll need with leadfree I'm looking
again into the more advanced systems. The goal is of course to achieve
optimal oven-profiles on a wide variety of thermally demanding products
with minimal efforts.
I'm looking for some input about the strong and weaker points of the
systems that are currently on the market, like ECD, KIC and Datapaq.
Anyone willing to share their experiences ?
