        The footprint of the modern chair rollers is larger than the seat.
It keeps them from tipping over, specially towards the back of the person
sitting on it.  There were some old chair designs that would tip over and
people got hurt. Even chairs without rollers did that.  With good designed
chairs there would not be any problem.
