Yes, and sometimes the same component will have a different finish
according to plant of manufacture and sometimes the lead free part has
the same part number as the leaded finish and sometimes the part numbers
are the same but with a non alpha numeric symbol to denote Pb-free and
sometimes a completely different p/n. And this just from one
manufacturer. Nightmare.

I suppose the thinking is the item being bought is an electronic
functionality in a given physical size, and that is what is being
delivered, they are all solderable and will all be lead free in time and
what else is there to know?

On this basis all you will one day get from the supplier is a statement
saying that all devices made after a certain date will be Pb-free. What
you do with stuff already in the pipe or at distributors etc and how
will you know which is which is another matter. Double nightmare if you
are looking to be able to make a compliance type statement of your own.

Regards and happy to be just a solder [and soldering chemicals] supplier

To make things worse, sometimes they (the component companies) do not
know what the actual finish is. I mean they think it complies with the
spec, but...... It sounds "strange" but it happens.

Subject: Re: [TN] Components Suppliers who are using Tin Finishes

Oh Steve if only it was that easy!

From what we've found the component manufacturers have not done a great
job documenting what finishes have been used on what components. To
exacerbate the problem a lot of your components come from suppliers that
really don't keep track of trivial things like lead finish.

We are really struggling with this same thing. The manufacturers are
getting better at documenting what sort of finish is on their components
but it's not universal.

I hope others on this list have better news. There really needs to be an
industry standard as we transition away from solders containing lead.
Some sort of an part number indicator like P/N 123B35K-SN or
123B35K-PB/SN or ...

Good luck,

Ken Bloomquist

Subject: [TN] Components Suppliers who are using Tin Finishes

Hi All!

Does anybody know of a listing somewhere that shows what finishes
component suppliers are using? Or does one have to just call and ask
each one?

Appreciate any information...
