Hi Steve,

What we are finding is that each component manufacturer has to go through a
qualification procedure for each lead-free finish they use.
We are finding that most manufacturers have chosen only one lead-free finish
(some have two available) for each package family.

I have seen 100% tin finish on resistors, capacitors, SOICs, PLCCs, MLFs,
and QFPs, among others.

Sincerely,

PLEASE NOTE - Over 90% of all SMT packages are now available Lead-Free!!!

Subject: [TN] Components Suppliers who are using Tin Finishes

Hi All!

I've been asked by one of our sales folks what we are doing to try and
prevent the problem of Tin whiskers from occuring on the products that we
build...apparently he was asked that from a potential customer.

I've been doing some researching and studying the topic through net searches
and whatnot, and found a good paper at:

http://www.calce.umd.edu/lead-free/tin-whiskers/TINWHISKERMITIGATION.pdf

One of the things it said to do was to determine if any of the component
suppliers that you use, are using or considering using Tin finishes.

Does anybody know of a listing somewhere that shows what finishes component
suppliers are using? Or does one have to just call and ask each one?

Appreciate any information...

-Steve Gregory-
