I have not noticed a response to your inquiry on line, perhaps you have
gotten some off line responses. But in case you have not, the one word answer to
all of your questions is: Yes.

The basic concepts for sequential manufacture of PCBs has been in practice
for more than 20 years if one rightfully (IMHO) considers buried vias as a
sequentially fabricated PCB.

More recent (i.e., over the course of the last 8-10 years) there have been a
wide range of variations on that original theme. The IPC-2226 - Sectional
Design Standard for High Density Interconnect (HDI) Boards is an excellent
resource to help you get started.

Most of the major trade magazines have searchable websites where you can
access numerous articles on the subject that describe some of the many ways that
these types of circuits can be built. A few of them are listed below.

I also highly recommend reading come of Happy Holden's writings on the
subject. A web search using his name in quotes should bring you to many of his
