Quite right Doug. I was just trying to answer the question. Although 46058 is supposedly inactive we will still be seeing it called out on new designs for awhile. Just got one last week in fact. The guys doing board layout sometimes don't get the word right away. As for the soldermask spec. I had my first encounter back in Aug.
Merry Christmas to all.
Charles

Charles,
MIL-I-46058 is the military specification for conformal coating. It is
inactive for new designs and may be cancelled in the next 12-18 months.
IPC-CC-830B is a functional equivalent. The appropriate specification for
solder mask, which is DoD approved, is IPC-SM-840. Rev C is current.

46058 is the conformal coat spec. I use the same pen for solder mask touch
up. It has proven very good for this purpose. I have wave soldered boards
with this on it. It must be fully cured, not just dry before exposure to
solvents like RMA flux.

Hi Daan,

We use the Circuitworks Overcoat Pen for repair purposes but usually after
the boards are soldered so I don't know how it will behave during reflow or
wavesoldering.
It's very easy to use you only apply what you need and you don't need to
mix 2 components anymore
The TDS mentions that it meets the requirements of Mil-I-46058C (I'm not
familiar with this one) and IPC-A-610C and there seems to be a toll free
number you can call 1-800-TECH-401

Hope this helps

Happy holidays to everyone out there

Hilbrand

Hi All,

The 2-component epoxy soldermask that we've always used in our assembly
shop for repairs and modifications of bare boards has gone obsolete. I'm
looking for recommendations on alternative materials.
On the web I found the Circuitworks Overcoat Pen, which seems to me is
a very easy alternative, although this pen contains a green acrylic
conformal coating, and not really a solderresist. Is anyone using this
pen, and is it suitable for high-reliablility (military) boards ?
