I am not involved in design but in my work instructions I use the cathode as pin 1. I make an exception if the customer has designated some other ref.

        Since before there were computer based schematic packages
        we always considered cathode as pin 1.

        However there are several schematic libraries that will
        call the anode as pin 1.  Others that support long pin name
        strings will call them anode and cathode, spelled out.
