Hello Lead Free List Serve.
I am Raoul Clarke with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
(one of those government guys!). I have monitored this list serve for quite
some time and find if very informative and fascinating in some of the talk
about the finer points of the technology. Florida is a Stakeholder in the
United States National Electronics Product Stewardship Initiative (NEPSI). I
have seen some discussion on NEPSI in the postings. As part of the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection's annual estimates of the Pb content
of various products that may be recycled or disposed in the state of Florida,
I'm trying to estimate how much lead there is in the typical desktop and
laptop circuit board that is being discarded or recycled currently. I'm
focusing on the typical mother board and disregarding Pb in smaller boards
and other components (as they likely contain such small amounts or vary so
widely with the product as to be statistical noise). Do you have any idea of
the range of Pb in circuit boards, maybe from board metals recovery assays or
manufacturing process knowledge? I would like to develop some kind of average
for the average small business/home computer and laptop. Since the life
expectancy of a computer these days ranges around 3 years, I am asking for
the Pb content of motherboards manufactured in 1999 or 2000. The "typical"
CPU or laptop is defined as the introductory or basic model in its day.
Any range, estimate or guess that you could provide will be helpful. I can
use any type of information: % Pb, ppm of Pb, avg grams of Pb/board, etc. We
know the number of CPUs and laptops that are recycled in Florida, so the
Pb/board number will be applied to the number of units, assuming 1
board/unit. Thanks for your time and any help.
Raoul Clarke
