Many of the surface mount parts are in the verge of being damaged by
the present reflow processes. Increasing 20 or more degrees will damage many
parts or shorten their useful life. Changing to leadfree solder will cost us
plenty in many ways. We will replace one toxic metal with other toxic
metals. Reliability of the finish product will go south. We will use more
energy to produce. People are getting on the bandwagon as if it was the
greatest thing ever discovered. As for the WMD there is plenty of evidence
that they had them, Just because Saddam is not found does not mean he never
existed.
        Regards,
        Ramon

> Sorry, my response was a bit flippant. My problem is that I continue to
read, after all these years, of all of the difficulties that people on this
forum are having making the conversion to leadfree and knowing that there is
no environmental benefit at the end of the day (and that perhaps it may even
make it worse).
>
> I believe this simple truth is known by most folks in the industry but now
days it is simply ignored because there is a job to be done. Like the
missing WMDs in Iraq, there has been no proof ever presented of demonstrable
harm from lead in electronic solders. However, at least in the case of the
WMDs, the world press is now asking hard questions.
>
> Meanwhile talented and concerned engineers such as yourself and many
others in this forum and around the world are being pressed to solve a non
problem; one that has been blown out of proportion by well-meaning souls who
likely still have no idea what havoc they have wreaked. To me this is sad
and that in turn tends to hit my cynical button.
>
> It is even more frustrating when there is a call, in the wake of leadfree,
to recycle all electronic products making any perceived or potential risk
totally nonexistent and defying all logic. (I don't have a problem with
recycling mind you just the sequencing of events in this case.)
>
> I have one hope out of this fiasco and that is that electronic
manufactures around the globe will raise their prices to pay for all of this
useless development to secure a brighter future for themselves to pay for
research on products and processes that are of true value.
>
> Meanwhile I see that Dave has provided some practical comments. I am
certain that you will receive many more.
>
> In closing I should say that, as was the case with the "coalition of the
willing" in Iraq, I have no doubt the electronics industry will capture the
"Baghdad" called "Leadfree". What I remain skeptical about is what will
happen after it has been captured.
