We control what our employees are listening to on our production floor. The radio plays over ceiling mounted speakers. In order to appease everyone we switch between a variety of stations, from country to oldies to classic rock to soft rock to current hits. Every fifth week I feel like taking vacation (apologies to country music fans, but I find listening to that for five days straight rather annoying.

I would agree that you want to keep the devices away from the work surface. Not sure that they will generate or hold and ESD charge, but better to be safe than sorry. As far as the distraction factor, I can't speak for everyone else, but I work better when it is quiet.
