Hmmm,

I'm reminded of a story from Tom Peters' book 'In search of excellence'
where research into the optimum environment for productivity was
researched in a large machine shop. After many experiments etc it was
decided that the lighting level should be raised and as predicted
productivity went up. Some time later for after more research the
lighting level was dropped again and guess what, productivity went up!
The conclusion being that the important thing was that 'management' was
taking in interest in what other people were doing.

I wonder if the studies which show a difference in quality pre and post
Walkman (or vice versa) suffer from the same misapprehension?
