I didn't see the original message for this thread, but I'll have to
disagree a little on the press fit connector. On the contrary, I feel they
do leave room for error. We have been using them for a while now, and
rework is not a problem. Removal of the connector leaves no pertinent
damage to the barrel interior, and there is no danger of a lifted pad. We
use these for military applications, so they can definitely stand the
rigors of vibration. As for the CC, it has been our practice to have it
removed from all new drawings anyway. In the early 90's we performed a
study to show that if the actual unit the circuit card is installed in has
any sealing characteristics, then the protection from corrosion provided by
the CC is minimal. I believe the difference in the onset of corrosion was
something like 20 hours. This was once again using Military environmental
requirements.

        Dave:
They require a special tool to support the board and a press
capable
of about 2000 - 3000 lbs thrust. The stress that the press fit
connectors
put on each and every barrel is significant. It leaves the barrel open for
debris, moisture and some people do not want CC inside of it. So to mask
the
board to prevent CC from going inside the barrels, can be a bear. Press fit
connector do not allow much for mistakes. I am partial to using solder
doughnuts or solder robot.
        Regards,
        Ramon.
