Subject: Re: [TN] TN Walkman Radios on the Assembly line

Hi Lance,
I'm of the same opinion as Mike. They probably don't hurt anything as far as
interference with auto run equipment (EMI or interference issues), but they
are a safety hazard and DO (not "can") affect the focus of the worker. I do
not know of any studies that have been done, but I know for a fact from
personal observation that this type of distraction is detrimental to the
quality of the products produced. We no longer permit cell phones, walkmans
or any electronic entertainment devices on the factory floor. The only
electronic communications gear we use is a two-way "Talkabout" to keep in
touch with each other for immediate contact, when required.

That being said, if you have any kind of RF testing in your factory test
processes you may want to steer clear of any/all wireless comm devices in
the factory. Even though RF send/receive test beds tend to be well isolated
from external frequency interference, they sometimes do NOT tolerate the use
of these wireless devices in close proximity. We had a case recently where
the 900MHz cordless phones in an adjoining office space were thought to have
caused interference with an RF test bed we use. Our talkabouts were not
close to the frequencies being used so proved to be fine in this
application. Turned out that the phones were not interfering, but there is a
good chance that this can happen unless you have the area "caged" and
grounded.

Even though walkmen and personal radios don't fall into the wireless
category, they do fall into the distraction category. Some folks can use
them and still do a job well. Others can't, but think they can. The proof is
in the number of nonconformities that you see from each situation.

Good luck in finding a basis fore making your decision. I would look in
psychological studies, HR studies about workplace use of these devices, etc.
I don't think there is going to be an IPC, J-Std or related standard that
will give guidance in this situation.

Subject: [TN] TN Walkman Radios on the Assembly line
Importance: High

Can anyone out there tell me if there is a standard concerning Walkmans
and headsets on the electronic assembly lines? I'm wondering if there is
interference with possible damage to components from these radios. Until
recently the stuffing line employees were allowed to have them as well as
other assemblers. Is there an ESD standard or something? Anything would
be helpful.

Thanks
