I believe most natural fibers are not affected by toluene. Wool, cotton, linen, and natural sponge should remain unaffected. Another possible fix for excessive evaporation is to reduce the surface area of the solution by placing floating solid objects in the toluene. Plating baths used expanded polymer star or ball shaped objects. You might consider cork balls (fishing floats) or if you can find enough volunteers, wine bottle corks ;=). The surface of the solution must be relatively still or the floating objects will increase the evaporation rate. I can explain the rational for that statement if you wish.

If a suitable liquid could be identified, a less dense, imiscible, low evaporation rate material could be used as a seal floating on the toluene. Given the low density of toluene, a liquid solution seems unlikely.

Subject: [TN] Sponges and Toluene

Anyone know of any sponge material that is resistant to toluene? I have a
spray application where the spray heads, to avoid gumming up, are immersed
in toluene. This leads to a fairly large evaporation. My thought was that
a sponge material would keep the heads wet with toluene, but would minimize
evaporative loss. I am open to suggestions.
