I just read that the proposed review date is 2005. This is a year before
the introduction of the ban. I am not sure where that leaves anybody if
they change their mind, but even in EU speak that hardly counts as an
extension. Can anyone verify this date?

Regards
Mike

The high lead exemption is a limited recognition by the EU of the
reality that there is no technically easy or affordable alternative to
high lead solders in some applications. Otherwise the ban on lead
irrespective of cost or technical difficulty (to loosely paraphrase the
directive) remains.
This exemption should really be reviewed as an extension. It will be
reviewed - presumably when they have worked out how to change reality!
Or maybe someone will come up with some alternative. Who knows?

regards

Mike

Subject: [LF] New member and question on EU regulation

Hi all,

I just signed up as a new member as I need to get our company started
thinking about the leadfree issues and what actions we should be taking
to address these.

I was looking through the documents available on the IPC leadfree
website, and noticed on one that high temp solders containing 85% lead
are exempted from the legislation. Can someone explain the reasoning for
this?

Also, are there any other resources available for leadfree information
and legislation?

Thanks,

Blair Hogg
