---------------------------From Joe O'Neil-------------

We recently (3-4 months ago) installed the 'MacDermid Sterling' silver finish line in our Fabrication facility. Handling is a big issue, as well as the appearance (i.e.. tarnish). To date we have assembled all but one job in our own, on-site, assembly operation. However, the one job that was assembled out of house did not go well, as the assembler failed to use proper handling techniques (gloves).

My advice is to make certain that everyone in your supply chain is familiar (has actual experience) with Immersion Silver, hold some type of NPI meeting prior to launching even your prototypes because there are real assembly considerations (some apertures on fine pitch devices might need to be opened a bit).
Although the finish has gained a lot of traction in the high volume world, we are a quickturn, high mix facility and we are very happy with the finish, its performance, and its acceptance in the market.
- Cost is a big benefit.
- Solderability is terrific.
- The tarnish issue could be an issue, do you have boards that may sit for 6+ months?, if so, do you have a supplier willing to strip and refinish the boards?
- HASL is still better in Rework and/or multiple remove/replace applications.

Hope this helps.
