Happy, the contact for lead free HASL was/is Greg Bartlett, at Teledyne
HALCO. He spoke at IPC Alternate Final Board Finishes Committee in 2001 for the
Lead Free HASL Users Group. Phone I have for Greg is 603-889-6191, ext 239.
E-mail I have for Greg is [log in to unmask]
My understanding is that problems of putting lead free solders in a HASL
machine had been pretty well worked out. Seems to me they were dross formation,
attack on stainless steel, etc. Of course, operation had to be at a hotter
temperature than eutectic solder.

We have a customer asking for Pb-free HASL. I am not familiar with this
finish. The temperature for Pb-free solder would be quite high and the
effects on a board, as well as the HASL equipment might be detrimental.
The customer says it is used in Japan, he quotes a Matsushita Electric
news release. The release seems to indicate that they are using a
lead-free solder paste but that word is not used, just "PCBs with
lead-free solder". Does anyone know of a Pb-free HASL process?
