I agree. I did a few wine-tasting courses, run by one of Switzerland's
best oenologists and the first thing he said with course 1 was to the
effect of:
If you have come here to improve your vocabulary and to talk twaddle,
then please leave now: we will refund your money. If you have come here
to learn how to appreciate wine, then welcome.

I must admit, I admire the glib tongues of wine snobs, as I could never
think of saying that the first nose is reminiscent of burnt cork and
sheep's dung, but this develops into a fine bouquet of the inside of a
Turkish wrestler's jock strap with just a fine hint of athlete's foot or
whatever rubbish these guys do come out with. Notwithstanding, there are
some 200 or so distinct aromas identifiable by trained noses in various
wines, but I've now lost my finer discernment, having lived with Cypriot
wines for 5 years or so (this is not to say they are all bad, but the
variety is limited).
