HI Paul,

I am not aware of any reports on Sn96/Ag4 strength properties but I do remember a report that was done on Sn63/Pb37.

I know that I have in my files somewhere a report that was generated more than 25 years ago by NASA-Westinghouse that addressed the shear strength of Sn63/Pb37 solder at temperatures from -54 degrees C to +125 degrees C. The report showed that as the solder got hotter, the solder's modulus of elasticity property got lower, which resulted in a lower shear strength of the solder material. And as an example, at + 80 degrees C (176 degrees F) the solder shear strength is 2200 PSI.

Also, I remember that one of the divisions of the Sandia Corporation also did some work in this area as well that was published around the same time frame.

In closing, I will try to locate the report and/or find the report number and pass it on to you, or perhaps some other individual on TechNet Forum knows of the same report.

Regards,

faz

Subject: [TN] Solder strength

A supplier recently informed me that SN96/AG4 loses 80% of its
"strength" between 20C and 175C. I assume he meant shear or tensile
strength.

Has anyone else heard this?

Does anyone know where I could see test results?

What about SN63/SN37?
