Bev,

How thick do you consider "thick undercoat"?

The NCMS PWB Surface Finishes work from several years ago looked at Pd surface finishes. One issue with Pd is that it dissolves much slower than other finishes. The best data I've seen on dissolution rates is the 1969 Wally Bader work published in the December Welding Journal.

For near eutectic SnPb solder at 450F
Material Radial Dissolution Rate (10-6in/sec)
Gold 117.9
Silver 43.6
Copper 4.1
Palladium 1.4

Regards,
George

Technetters,
I have searched the archives and all I have been able to find is one informative e-mail from Phil Hinton from August 22, 1998. Has anyone every run across palladium as a thick undercoat? if so, what, if any, grief did it cost you?

regards,
Bev Christian
