Gerald: It a fairly complicated process involving pre-treatments of alkaline
and acids soak cleans and anodic, cathodic electrocleans followed by a
cyanide copper electroplate strike, copper plate then your nickel plate
followed by gold.
Unless you are very experienced in plating with a complete plating shop at
your disposal I wouldn't try it. If you cut corners or skip steps you will
have marginal success. This is a job best left to the experts and even then
they have problems with adhesion.
Reference ASTM B254 to learn more about it. Good Luck!

Subject: [TN] Need a way to guarantee adhesion of nickel/gold electroplate
to stainless steel.....

Hello Technet
I need to electroplate the outer surface of a stainless steel cylinder with
nickel and then hard gold. The cylinder is .375" diameter by 1" long. I'm
concerned about the adhesion of the nickel/gold to the stainless. Will the
nickel properly adhere? Are there any chemical microetchants or adhesion
promoters that guarantee success?

TIA
