Hi Suzanne! The ASTM B117 specification can be used for conducting salt
spray testing in terms of apparatus and test methodology but the "pass or
fail" criteria is a value selected by you and your customer - typically in
terms of X number of exposure hours and still have the assembly be
functional. Salt fog/spray is a very harsh environmental test to apply to
electronics - Collins will be publishing a paper at the IPC Fall meeting on
galvanic reactions of surface finishes and a salt fog/spray environment
(live, unprotected assemblies are not a pretty sight after testing!). Good
Luck. (Doug probably has more information on salt fog/spray testing but
you'll have to wait until he gets a Mountain Dew into his system.)

Does anyone have literature or real life testing on the performance of
paralyne under a salt fog test? What thickness was required to pass salt
fog testing? Was the cca directly exposed or was it inside a box/device?
