Steve,

If you know that you have all the required documentation, documentation
systems, experience, etc., already waiting in the wings, I guess you could
l leave off writing a lot of detailed stuff. As long as there is enough
stuff written down to be sure the proto's will be built properly and
configuration control can be maintained, you should be OK. You would know
as well as anyone what records you are required to keep and how you prove
what you've done, so you are in the best position to judge where you can
reduce the volume of ink to be used.

The thing that strikes me, though, in these situations is this: if you can
do the prototype job properly while still cutting back on the paperwork,
why have you always wasted so much time, ink, paper, etc, obviously doing
far more than was necessary? Either you're planning to take shortcuts now
or will be doing too much later - which is it, bud?

Personally, my instructions contain no more words than are absolutely
necessary, and no more pictures than are required for clarity. If I cut
down on either, I create gaps in the information and leave grey or
ambiguous areas that lead can to misinterpretation, error, rework and more
wasted time than it would have taken to write a proper set of instructions
in the first place.

You know I'm just trying to say "Don't do it!", but if the build is not
that critical, you can cut back on the niceties, as long as the nasities
don't take just as long or longer to produce. Only you can tell.

Have a good weekend, all.

Peter

I build most of our proto boards, those I don't I supervise closely. I hang
up a yellow " prototype in progress " sign ( color was arbitrary ) and
keep a note pad handy. I do write a work inst. first but it will usually be
very generic, like wave solder info will have blanks to be filled in. This
fullfills our ISO req. and allows me to do what I gotta to make it work.
When the proto finnaly works right I go back and write a work inst.

just curious...how do you deal with ISO and prototypes? Do you do
full-blown work instructions? Try to run things through normal
production processes, so that you have traceability? Or do you you
treat it as it is, a prototype?

Going through some stuff here...thinking that we put more stuff into
prototypes than we need to...just curious what everybody else
does...I have my past experience, but that's not good enough.

Like to hear from everybody else...
