Hi, Henry,

I've also been looking for systems to visually inspect underneath BGA's and
the likes, and had a go with an Ersascope. The full-fledged system with
computer attached is very impressive (also rather expensive) but has one
major limitation - it does not penetrate under the BGA, so you can only
view everything from the edge of the component. If you have big BGA's (I
use some that are 35mm and 40mm square, 1mm and 1.27mm pitch) it's quite
difficult to see right to the middle of the device at this size - the light
gets a bit uncertain and much of the interior balls is shielded from view
by the serried ranks of other balls. On the plus side, it can see
underneath any component with even a hint of a stand-off height.

I was hoping to find just a simple sort of thin fibre optic thing like an
edoscope that could be inserted beneath a BGA and allow you to view balls
face to face, even at the centre, but have so far failed to find such a
thing. If memory serves, there was a brief thread about such a gadget in TN
quite a while ago, and I seem to recall someone (probably Steve G)
mentioning a simple device costing relatively few dollars. Does anyone know
of such a thing?

Peter

We are looking at "under the BGA" inspection systems.

Does anybody have any opinions regarding ERSASCOPE or METCAL VPI-1000?

Thanks.
