Effectively ALL fluxes are synthetic, except for pure water-white wood
rosin, which even may be, if you count distillation as a synthesis.

However, what you may be referring to is "Wally's Wonder Flux" which Dr
W. Rubin of Multicore developed in, I think, the early 1980s or late
1970s. I think the trade name was Xersin. This was like an activated
rosin flux except that the rosin was replaced by a synthetic polymer. It
was possibly the first true "no-clean" flux, because it required a
jackhammer to remove it :-)

Modern "no-clean" fluxes contain little or no resin/rosin and are mainly
a small quantity of dicarboxylic acids in a solvent/vehicle base.
