With an unstabilised and unbuffered solvent and fine aluminium powder,
the reaction with some halocarbons may be sufficiently rapid and
exothermic to be considered as explosive. Obviously, at the temperatures
involved, hydrogen halides and carbonyl halides (such as phosgene) may
be formed as breakdown products. This could be dangerous but very
unlikely to happen in real life, although superficial attack of
amphoteric metal and alloy surfaces is not unknown with badly maintained
solvents.
