a really effective way to do this on the cheap is to use zonealarm.. do a
search at download.com for it..

it is basically a firewall that you can set up to let you know when a
program is trying to access the net.. it will let you then make the
decision as to whether that program should be allowed to hit the net..

this will keep that program from hitting the net, and will also catch all
sorts of other programs hitting the net that you would never have dreamed of..

truthfully, i wouldn't be too paranoid about it.. most likely, nothing has
been transmitted that is sensitive, but i would take measures to stop it..
and i would most definitely get a good firewall, and learn how to use it..

a word of caution about adaware.. unless you are really familiar with the
filesystem of your machine, and what files really do need to be there, i
would be very careful with adaware, or any other anti spyware program..
like all tools, they are best used when you have a really good
understanding of them... otherwise, you can hack off a finger or poke an
eye out..
