I have a customer who just recently started seeing pin holes on passive
components only. The pin holes only show up on the first side of a
double-sided board after the second reflow. There are not any pin holes on
the leaded components or on the second side. The solder paste lot has not
changed and as far as he knows, the boards and components are from the same
lots as last Thursday (when they did not have the problem.) The boards are
Ni/Pd/Au electrolytic plated, the caps are 100% tin and the resistors are
90Sn/10Pb.
Has anybody seen anything like this before and how did you resolve the
issue? My gut feel is it is a plating issue but, why did it just show up?
Why doesn't it happen on leaded components?
Best,
Kevin Gaugler
