Good afternoon,

We are SMT newbies and are in the process of converting a design from PTH to SMT. One area that has been a problem in past CM quotes is our penchant to spec parts by vendor part number. In an attempt to break this habit we would like to spec our parts by description, e.g., 1206, 10K, Thick Film, ...

Is there an accepted standard method of describing parts so any CM we go to will not need a secret decoder ring? Is this a written standard or just common practice that everybody has agreed upon and been doing for years?

Thanks in advance,

Phil Nutting
